Looking to better the sport... if you have been into watercross (aka jetsking) for a while, you probably remember the Bud Days. At one time our sport was comparable to motocross - full lines, and when I say full lines I mean heat races after heat races with last chance qualifier to make it the main. Each regional weld 3-5 world qualifying races in order to "earn the invitation" to go to the World Finals and once you made it there... tons of fans, things to do, hundreds of vendors selling everything under the sun - what a sight to see!
This was sadly followed by the Bud Hangover Days... as a regional promoter UWP was just coming into its own, we were thrilled that we had earned the right to hold one of those World Qualifying races for the World Finals, we thought WOW we've made it. We had no idea what was ahead; we went from 8 regional promoters in Region 8, down to just UWP and our numbers were dwindling. As promoters we all were waiting for direction on how to improve our sport, but that direction never came.
Now skipping ahead to 2014 race season... for the first time in almost 10 years our participation grew substantially - 25% higher than 2013. Was it because we were working on re-branding the sport? Was it because the economy seems to be creeping forward? Why were we waiting as though the greater powers to be cared? Nothing was going to happen, unless we made it happen ourselves!
2015 is the year we take the bull by the horns; take the sport back and working even harder to make it better, make it grow... The Pro Watercross Tour will be making changes over the upcoming winter months, starting with a new membership program for the tour; this will be the only membership you will need to compete at any Pro Watercross event. Secondly, we will be working to put a new rulebook in place that will be more user friendly and not so complicated. Lastly, a Pro Watercross World Championships; where competitors from all over the world can come and compete fairly, be able to see their moto by moto results, as well as see how they finished overall, be awarded a purse worthy of a World Championship.
